An Introduction to Sufi Poetry and Practices

Come, come, whoever you are,

Wanderer, worshipper, lover of leaving...

Greetings, Caravan Friends!

Come gather in the yurt at Miriam's Well on (mostly) 4th Thursdays for a monthly evening of the Sufi practices that inspired Hafez and Rumi, generously interspersed with poetry from these and other Sufi masters.

Come ready to move, as we experience body prayers, astrological walks, and the Dances of Universal Peace inspired by the Sufi lineage of Hazrat Inayat Khan and Murshid Samuel Lewis.

Come ready to chant as we do mantric practices from amongst the 99 "Most Beautiful" Names of God together.

Come ready to breathe deeply as we connect with Source in the silent zhikr (remembrance)meditations of the dervishes.

Come ready to read your favorite Rumi and Hafiz poems and to discuss some of the issues surrounding Sufi teachings and their relationship to Islam.

Depending on participant interest we may even practice beginning elements of the turn, the whirling practice of the Sufis and their Central Asian shaman predecessors.

I hope you'll join me for these evenings of fellowship and spiritual practice.

Karuna Teresa Foudriat,

M Ed, is an ordained minister and teacher of the Sufi Ruhaniat , a universal Sufi order dedicated to helping individuals unfold their highest spiritual purpose. She currently works as a resident chaplain at the Albany Medical Center.

Karuna helped form

Chrysalis, a group seeking to bring home funerals to the Hudson Valley, and co-founded The 40 Day Odyssey, a series of spiritual support groups based on a 40-day rhythm. She also leads Dances of Universal Peace:

A Waldorf teacher and storyteller for 25 years, she has taught classes about Islam and comparative religion for folks of all ages and religious backgrounds.

For over 30 years Karuna has done long meditation retreats in both the Buddhist and Sufi traditions. She lives, gardens, and keeps bees at her home in Saugerties, NY.
